Yearly compounding, editable rate

PPF calculator

Yearly contribution in, maturity out — with the interest for each year shown so the compounding is visible rather than asserted.

PPF is a floating rate reset every quarter — edit it freely.

Short answer: ₹1,50,000 a year for 15 years at 7.1% matures at about ₹40.7 lakh, of which ₹22.5 lakh is your own money. The interest compounds yearly on the balance, which is why the second half of the tenure earns far more than the first.

Why the rate field is editable

PPF's rate is not fixed for the life of the account: the government notifies it each quarter, and it has moved between 7.1% and 8% over the last decade. A projection that hard-codes one rate is a guess dressed as a number, so the field is yours.

Deposit early in the year

Interest is calculated on the lowest balance between the 5th and the last day of each month. Depositing in April rather than March is worth a full year of interest on that contribution — over fifteen years that difference is larger than any rate change you are likely to see.

PPF questions

What interest rate does this use?

Whatever you type — 7.1% is the default because that is the rate in force at the last update, but PPF is a floating rate the government resets every quarter. Change the field to test a lower or higher rate rather than trusting one number forever.

How is the interest compounded?

Yearly, on the balance including that year’s contribution — which is how PPF works when you pay in before the 5th of April. A contribution made at the end of the year earns less; this projection assumes the start-of-year case.

What are the deposit limits?

₹500 minimum and ₹1,50,000 maximum per financial year in one PPF account. Deposits above the cap earn no interest and are not eligible for the 80C deduction, so the yearly field is capped at that limit on the form.

Is the maturity amount tax-free?

PPF is EEE — the deposit, the interest and the maturity are all exempt, subject to the deposit cap and the account being held correctly. That is a rule about the scheme, not something this projection can verify for your account.
