MCMXCIV = 1994

Roman numerals converter

Type a number or a numeral. The page converts in both directions and refuses non-standard forms with the correct spelling.

Short answer: 1994 is MCMXCIV — 1000 + 900 + 90 + 4. 4 is IV, not IIII, and 2016 is MMXVI, the year in Roman numerals.

Additive and subtractive

Symbols are added left to right, except where a smaller symbol precedes a larger one, when it is subtracted: IV is 4, XL is 40, CM is 900. Only six subtractive pairs are legal, which is what makes validation possible rather than guesswork.

Worked example

2024 = MMXXIV: MM (2000) + XX (20) + IV (4). A film dated MCMLXXVII is 1977, and a clock with IIII at four o'clock is the one place the standard form is routinely ignored.

Roman numeral questions

How do Roman numerals work?

Seven symbols — I, V, X, L, C, D, M — combined additively, with six subtractive pairs: IV, IX, XL, XC, CD and CM. So 1994 is MCMXCIV: M + CM + XC + IV.

Why is IIII rejected?

Because the standard form of 4 is IV. Clock faces and some old inscriptions use IIII, but it is not a standard numeral; the page says so and tells you the standard form instead of silently converting it.

What is the largest number it handles?

3,999, written MMMCMXCIX. Classical Roman numerals have no symbol above M and no zero, so larger values need the overline notation, which is not part of the standard system and is not invented here.

Where are Roman numerals still used?

Chapter and volume numbering, film copyright years, clock faces, monarchs’ names and the Super Bowl. Because they are still read, converting them wrongly is a visible error — which is why this page validates rather than guesses.
