Unit converter

Pick a category, a unit in and a unit out. The factor used is shown, and every other unit in the category is listed at the same time.

Short answer: multiply by the factor to reach the base unit, then divide by the target factor. 1 mile is exactly 1,609.344 m, 1 kg is 2.20462 lb, and 100 °C is 212 °F — the last one by formula, since a factor cannot move a zero point.

Why some converters give slightly different answers

Different countries define gallons, tons and calories differently, and some tools round factors to four decimals. This page uses the exact SI definitions and shows six decimals, so a mismatch usually means the other tool used a different definition rather than an error.

Worked example

A recipe calls for 2 cups: 2 × 0.2365882365 = 0.473176473 L, or 473.18 ml. A tyre at 32 psi is 32 × 6,894.757 = 220,633 Pa, or about 2.18 bar.

Unit conversion questions

Are the conversion factors exact?

The definitions are: an inch is exactly 25.4 mm, a pound exactly 0.45359237 kg, a gallon exactly 3.785411784 litres, and a calorie is the thermochemical 4.184 J. Temperature is converted by formula rather than a factor, because Celsius and Fahrenheit have different zero points.

Why does it refuse a temperature below absolute zero?

Because −273.15 °C is the floor of the Kelvin scale, and a negative kelvin value is not physical. Printing one would look like a working calculator producing a meaningless answer.

Which gallon and which ton does it use?

US liquid gallon (3.785 L) and metric tonne (1,000 kg), both labelled in the unit list. UK gallons and short tons differ, so the label matters more than the number.

Does it convert currencies or cooking volumes?

No currencies — those need a live rate and this site does not fetch one. Cooking units are limited to US teaspoon, tablespoon, cup and gallon; weights in recipes should be converted with the mass category.
