Short answer: paste your text above and read the counts live — words, characters with and without spaces, sentences, paragraphs, lines, plus reading and speaking time. A word is any run of non-space characters.

Where the limits actually are

University assignments often cap at 2,000 words, a tweet at 280 characters, and an SOP portal at a character count that includes spaces. Knowing which of the two character figures a form wants is the difference between an accepted upload and a rejected one, which is why both are shown here.

Reading time is a planning figure

200 words per minute is comfortable prose. A legal clause or a dense specification can be half that, and a rehearsal script read quickly can be faster than 130. Use the number to decide whether a section is too long, not to promise an audience a duration.

Counting questions

How are words counted?

Any run of non-whitespace characters counts as one word. That is the same rule Word and Google Docs use for space-separated scripts, which is why the numbers match on English text. Languages written without spaces need a different rule, and no counter can be right for both.

What do the reading and speaking times assume?

Reading at 200 words per minute and speaking at 130 — the usual planning figures for prose. Dense technical writing reads slower, and a script read aloud for a video is usually faster, so treat both as planning numbers rather than promises.

Why do character counts differ between tools?

Mostly line endings and Unicode. This tool counts characters after normalising Windows line breaks, and counts a flag emoji or an accented letter as the number of characters the browser stores. Two tools that disagree by one or two are usually counting line breaks differently.

Is the text sent anywhere?

No. The counting runs in this tab on the text you paste, and nothing is transmitted or stored. You can type a confidential draft and the page never makes a request.
