Short answer: paste the digits. A green result means the Verhoeff digit matches — the number was not mistyped. It is not a confirmation that the Aadhaar exists, and the panel says so next to the badge.
What the check catches
Every single wrong digit and every swap of two neighbouring digits. That is exactly the class of error a form makes, which is why the check digit exists. It is also the entire promise: arithmetic on twelve characters, no lookup, no network call.
What it cannot do
- Confirm issuance. A fabricated number with a valid check digit is trivial to generate; the digit proves arithmetic, not identity.
- Reveal a name or address. Those live in UIDAI’s systems behind authentication this page does not have.
- Verify a masked number. With only the last four digits there is nothing to check — the tool will say so rather than fail silently.
The PAN validator explains the same limit for a number that has no check digit at all, and the GSTIN validator shows what a real checksum can and cannot establish.
