Short answer: choose a margin preset or type the four margins in points, then press “Crop and download”. Cropping moves the crop box, so the text stays selectable and the file does not grow. It hides the trimmed area rather than deleting it.
What a crop box actually is
Every PDF page has a media box (the paper) and a crop box (what a viewer shows). Moving the crop box inwards is how print tools trim a document without re-encoding anything. Because the original content is still inside the file, a crop is not a privacy tool — for that you need redaction, where the content is removed, not covered.
When the border is the problem
Scans made on a flatbed often carry a wide white border, and a two-up print wastes half the sheet on it. Cropping to the text block fixes both. If the scan is also skewed, straighten it in an image editor first — this tool changes the page boundary, it does not rotate or deskew the pixels inside it.
