Short answer: under the new regime a ₹15,00,000 salary is ₹14,25,000 taxable after the ₹75,000 standard deduction, which is ₹97,500 of tax including cess. The old regime only beats that when your deductions are large enough to cut taxable income below about ₹10,50,000.
The rebate is a cliff, not a slope
Up to ₹12,00,000 taxable the section 87A rebate cancels the tax entirely. One rupee above it, the rebate disappears — which is why marginal relief exists: between ₹12,00,000 and about ₹12,70,000 you pay only the amount by which your income exceeds the limit. A ₹12,10,000 taxable income pays ₹10,400, not ₹61,500.
How to use the comparison honestly
Enter the deductions you can actually document, not the maximum allowed. A ₹1,50,000 80C claim needs the investments to exist; a home-loan interest claim needs the loan. Comparing a realistic old regime against the new one is the only comparison that means anything.
