Live lookup · India Post

PIN code finder

A PIN code to its post offices, district and state — or a post office name back to its PIN. Fetched live on every query so the answer is current, not a snapshot.

Short answer: type six digits for the post offices, district and state behind a PIN — or switch to name and search a post office. The lookup is live, so it reflects the directory today; the only thing sent is what you typed.

Why live instead of a bundled list

A bundled PIN dataset is a photograph: correct when it was taken, wrong later, and silently wrong — nothing on the page tells you the post office closed in 2023. A live lookup can fail loudly instead, which is better than being confidently out of date. The cost is that this page needs a network connection, and it says so rather than failing quietly.

Reading the result

Each row is one post office, with its branch type (Head, Sub, Branch) and whether it delivers. A non-delivery office can still own the PIN; the delivery office in the same table is the one an address should name. District and state come back with every row, because a PIN can straddle a district boundary in border areas.

PIN code questions

Where does the data come from?

Fetched live from api.postalpincode.in, a free public mirror of the India Post directory, every time you search. Nothing is bundled and nothing is cached on your device — that is deliberate: a PIN list baked into a page goes stale the month a post office opens or closes, and this one cannot.

What is sent when I search?

Only the six digits you typed, or the name you typed. No account, no cookie, no referrer, and nothing about the page you came from. The first party that sees your query is that public API, and the page says so instead of implying the lookup is local.

What does a PIN code actually identify?

A delivery area, not a building. The six digits encode region, sub-region, district and the post office within it, and one code can cover a dozen post offices — 110001 returns twenty-one. That is why the result is a table of offices rather than a single address.

What happens if the lookup service is down?

The page says it could not reach the service and produces no data. It does not fall back to an old copy, because a quiet fallback to stale records is exactly the failure this design avoids. Try again in a moment; the service is free and occasionally busy.

Can I look up a PIN from part of an address?

Switch the search to post office name and type at least three characters — Connaught, Koramangala, Anna Nagar. You get the post offices with matching names and each one’s PIN. It matches on the office name, so a street name that is not also an office name will not find anything.
