Rendered pages: the text is gone

Redact a PDF

Draw over what must not be read, and the marked pages become images — so the text under the box is genuinely removed rather than hidden behind black pixels.

The document is rendered and rebuilt in this tab. Nothing is uploaded.

Short answer: load the PDF, drag boxes over the text to remove, then redact. The pages you mark are rebuilt as images at the chosen resolution, so the characters are gone. Pages without a box are copied untouched and stay searchable.

Why this is different from drawing a rectangle

A PDF keeps its text in content streams, separate from whatever is drawn on top. A black rectangle is just another object painted later — the string underneath is untouched and comes back with a copy-paste. Rendering the page and drawing the boxes into the pixels is the only client-side way to make the removal real, and it is why the output pages lose their text layer.

Check the result before you send it

Open the downloaded file and try to select the redacted area. Nothing should highlight. The second check is to look for the value in a text search: it should not be found anywhere in the document, including the metadata — use the metadata remover as well when the name also appears in the author field.

Redaction questions

Why is a black rectangle not enough?

Because the text underneath is still in the file. Selecting the area, copying it, or running a text extractor exposes what the rectangle hides — this is the mistake behind most redaction failures in the news. This tool renders the marked page to an image, so the characters do not exist in the output at all.

What is the cost?

A redacted page stops being text: it cannot be selected, searched or copied, and a vector page becomes a JPEG. Pages you do not mark are copied untouched, so a 40-page file with two redactions keeps 38 searchable pages.

Is the rest of the document still searchable?

Yes. Only the pages carrying at least one box are rendered. The others keep their original content stream, text layer and links.

Does the file size change?

It can rise, because a rendered page at 150 dpi is a full-page JPEG. The result line reports the real before and after sizes. Lower the DPI in the options if size matters more than print quality on the redacted pages.
