HH:MM, in minutes underneath

Time duration calculator

Hours between two times with a break deducted, a timesheet total for a list of durations, and an add/subtract mode for shifting a time across midnight.

Short answer: 09:45 to 18:30 is 8h 45m, and after a 45-minute break it is8h 00m — 8 decimal hours for a payslip. 22:00 to 06:00 is 8h overnight, and 8:30 plus 7:45 plus 8:00 totals 24h 15m.

Why the break is a field, not a note

Timesheets are wrong far more often through an unsubtracted lunch break than through arithmetic. The break is deducted here, refused when it exceeds the shift, and the decimal-hours figure is shown because payroll multiplies that by an hourly rate.

Worked example

A week of 9:00–18:00 with an hour's break is 8:00 a day, so five days is 40h 00m. Add one 7:30 Saturday and the timesheet total becomes 47h 30m, which the total mode reports directly.

Time duration questions

How is a shift duration calculated?

Convert both times to minutes, subtract, then deduct the break: 09:45 to 18:30 is 525 minutes, so a 45-minute break leaves 480 minutes — exactly 8h 00m, with the decimal form 8.0 hours for payroll.

What happens with an overnight shift?

An end time earlier than the start is treated as the next morning, so 22:00 to 06:00 is 8 hours rather than a negative number. The page says which reading it used.

Can I add up a week of entries?

Yes — paste durations as H:MM separated by spaces, commas or new lines and the page totals them, accepting negative entries for a correction line. 8:30, 7:45, 8:00 totals 24h 15m.

Why 24:00 and not 00:00?

Both are accepted, but 24:00 is allowed as the end of a day so an 18:00 to 24:00 shift does not read as an overnight one. Only 24:00 is legal at hour 24; 24:30 would be a contradiction.
